Tango Tanimura – Talk & Live Whisk Demonstration
Takayama chasen, the bamboo tea whisks used in Japanese tea ceremony, are a traditional craft with over 500 years of history. Today, only 16 officially recognized chasen masters remain in Japan.
Tango Tanimura, the 20th-generation head of the Tanimura family, is one of these master artisans. In this special event, he will share insights into the history and philosophy of Takayama chasen while demonstrating the delicate handcrafting techniques used to create these remarkable tools from a single piece of bamboo.
Guests will have a rare opportunity to experience this living tradition up close.
The event also includes ceremonial-grade matcha from Marukyu Koyamaen (est. over 350 years ago in Uji) served with handmade Japanese sweets.
The event will take place in Downtown Portland near PSU.
