Yamanaka Lacquerware " Kikugiri Shūsō"  Nakatsugi / Matcha Container

Kikugiri Shūsō 菊桐秋草 is a traditional Japanese design that combines chrysanthemums (kiku), paulownia (kiri), and autumn grasses(Shūsō).

  • Chrysanthemums (kiku): Symbolize nobility, longevity, and autumn. The chrysanthemum is widely known as the symbol of the imperial family.
  • Paulownia (kiri): Represents nobility and purity, often used in designs associated with the imperial family or high-ranking households.
  • Autumn grasses (Shūsō): Represent the beauty of autumn and convey a sense of the season.

This design merges nobility and seasonal beauty, creating an elegant and meaningful motif.

Yamanaka Lacquerware is a traditional craft produced in Yamanaka Onsen, Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture, with a history of about 450 years. It is particularly known for its precise woodturning techniques, which create thin, smooth wooden surfaces, and for its exquisite lacquer coating and maki-e (gold or silver decoration). Multiple layers of lacquer enhance its durability and elegant gloss. Yamanaka lacquerware natsume (tea caddy) exemplifies both craftsmanship and refined beauty, making it a highly valued tea ceremony utensil that blends functionality with artistry.

Nakatugi is a type of tea container used in the tea ceremony to store matcha. It is characterized by the lid and body joint being located at the center of the body. In contrast to the natsume, where the joint is closer to the top, the nakatugi has the lid split at the center. It is standard in size and the most commonly used.
