This refined Nadeshiko (Japanese Pink) Matcha Bowl was created by Shisen Asano (浅野紫仙) and features a delicate nadeshiko motif, one of the traditional Seven Grasses of Autumn (Aki no Nanakusa).
Because nadeshiko is closely associated with the season of autumn grasses, this chawan is especially recommended for use from August through early October, when the motif feels most seasonally appropriate in the tea room.
The bowl is fired in a style similar to Raku ware, allowing it to retain a gentle warmth without becoming excessively hot when filled with hot water. Its soft clay body gives a warm, natural feel in the hands, while the rim offers a comfortable and gentle touch when drinking tea. The overall character of the bowl is quiet, warm, and inviting.
The wooden storage box bears a hakogaki (箱書) by Hōunsai (鵬雲斎), the 15th-generation Grand Master of Urasenke, giving this piece an important connection to the Urasenke tea tradition.
About the Artist – Shisen Asano
Shisen Asano (浅野紫仙) is a Japanese ceramic artist from Gifu Prefecture, born in 1949.
He works at Yamazaki Kiln (山崎窯) in Kakamigahara, Gifu. In 1967, he began studying under Josen Yamamoto (山本如仙) and developed his skills in the creation of traditional tea ceramics.
Asano is especially known for tea utensils inspired by classical Japanese styles, including Kenzan-style (Kenzan-utsushi) works, with a particular focus on matcha bowls. His work has been presented in solo exhibitions at department stores throughout Japan.
