Kyo | Touan Tenmoku Matcha Bowl :Flower Crystal Glaze
Color: 11 Hanada
Crafted by Touan Kiln, a long-established Kyoto-based pottery studio founded in 1922, this matcha bowl features their original glazing technique known as Hana-Kessho-yu (Flower Crystal Glaze).
The mesmerizing crystalline patterns—resembling blossoms blooming on the surface—are created naturally as minerals within the glaze crystallize during the firing process. Depending on the angle of the light, the appearance of the pattern subtly changes, adding depth and beauty to each piece.
This matcha bowl is Touan’s tenmoku-style piece, characterized by its slightly conical shape and inward-curving rim. The narrowing rim helps retain warmth, and the form fits comfortably in the hands—making it ideal for quiet, personal moments of enjoying matcha. Traditionally, tenmoku bowls are also used in more formal tea gatherings, lending a sense of dignity and presence. As part of a series that includes standard and katakuchi (spouted) bowls, this piece offers a unique silhouette that beautifully blends tradition with modern aesthetics. It’s perfect for those who value both elegance and practicality—suitable for everyday tea rituals as well as formal occasions.
Kindly note that each piece is individually handmade, so the color and crystal pattern may differ slightly from the photo. We appreciate your understanding.
