Kutani Ware Yunomi – Koi no Takinobori (鯉の滝上り)

A beautifully crafted Kutani ware yunomi featuring the traditional Koi no Takinobori (Carp Climbing the Waterfall) motif, hand-painted by Yoshinori Fukuda, a certified Traditional Craftsman of Kutani Ware recognized by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

The ceramic body is individually handcrafted at Kutani Wagama, and Fukuda-san personally applies the detailed overglaze decoration by hand. The accompanying inscription on the paulownia wood box (kiribako) is also handwritten by the artist.

The image of a carp powerfully swimming upstream and climbing a waterfall is a traditional symbol of perseverance, success, and advancement. Inspired by the legend of a carp overcoming the waterfall and becoming a dragon, the motif has long been associated with determination and achievement.

With more than 360 years of history, Kutani ware is celebrated for its distinctive and richly colored overglaze decoration. It gained international recognition through exhibitions in Europe, where it became widely known as “Japan Kutani.”

Presented in a signed paulownia wood box, this yunomi makes a meaningful gift for a new beginning, career milestone, or celebration of achievement, as well as a special addition to a Japanese ceramics collection.
