Bunrin – A Classical Chaire Form

Bunrin (文琳) is one of the classical forms of Chaire used in Chanoyu. Its softly rounded body and beautifully balanced proportions give it a graceful and distinguished presence in the tea room.

The name Bunrin is traditionally associated with an old name for the apple, referring to the vessel’s rounded, fruit-like silhouette.

A Chaire (茶入) is traditionally used to hold matcha for the preparation of koicha (thick tea). In Chanoyu, the Chaire is appreciated not only as a functional vessel, but also for its form, glaze, lid, and accompanying shifuku.

Pure Silk Tenpyo Kamon Shifuku

The accompanying shifuku (仕覆) is made from shoken (正絹), or pure silk, and features a traditional Tenpyo Kamon (天平華紋) design.

The term Tenpyo evokes the refined decorative arts of Japan’s Nara-period court culture, an era known for richly patterned textiles and artistic influences that traveled to Japan through the Silk Road and continental Asia.

The elegant floral design gives the textile a classical and dignified character, complementing the rounded Bunrin form of the Chaire beautifully.

In Chanoyu, the shifuku is much more than a protective pouch. Its textile, pattern, color, and cord are appreciated together with the Chaire and form an important part of the complete presentation of the utensil.
