Bunrin – A Classical Cha-ire Form

Bunrin (文琳) is one of the classical forms of cha-ire used in Chanoyu. Recognized by its softly rounded body and balanced proportions, the Bunrin form has been admired for generations as an elegant vessel for holding matcha used in the preparation of koicha (thick tea).

Unlike a natsume, which is primarily associated with usucha, a cha-ire (茶入) traditionally plays an important role in the preparation and presentation of koicha. Its ceramic form, glaze, lid, and accompanying shifuku are all appreciated as part of the complete utensil.

Pure Silk Araiso Shifuku

The accompanying shifuku (仕覆) is made from shoken (正絹), or pure silk, and features the classical Araiso (荒磯) motif.

Araiso, literally referring to a “rough shore,” traditionally depicts carp swimming among dynamic waves. The contrast between the powerful movement of the water and the fish swimming through it gives the pattern a lively and distinctive character.

The carp has long been associated in East Asian culture with perseverance, strength, and success, inspired by the legendary carp that overcomes powerful currents to ascend the Dragon Gate and transform into a dragon.

Araiso designs are also known within the world of traditional Japanese meibutsugire (名物裂)—historic and highly regarded textile patterns closely associated with Chanoyu and the coverings of treasured tea utensils.

The richly patterned silk shifuku creates a beautiful contrast with the ceramic cha-ire. In Chanoyu, the shifuku is more than a protective pouch: its textile, pattern, color, and cord form an important part of the aesthetic appreciation and presentation of the cha-ire.
