This black Raku tea bowl was crafted at the Kōdaiji Kiln, a kiln associated with temple culture in Kyoto and known for its refined approach to traditional Raku ware. Hand-formed rather than wheel-thrown, the bowl carries a soft, organic presence that fits naturally in the hands and invites a calm, reflective moment in tea practice.

The accompanying wooden box is inscribed by Togami Myōdō, a former priest of Daitoku-ji Temple, one of the most important Zen temples connected to the tea tradition. His calligraphy lends spiritual depth and cultural authenticity, placing the piece within the lineage of chanoyu.

The bowl bears the poetic name 和 Wa (“Harmony”), a central concept in Japanese aesthetics and tea philosophy, reflecting balance, respect, and peaceful coexistence. The deep black glaze, with its subtle variations and gentle luster, enhances the quiet strength of the form and embodies the wabi aesthetic—beauty found in simplicity, imperfection, and depth.

This piece is offered in very good pre-owned condition and has been carefully preserved. It is suitable for use in tea gatherings and for collectors who appreciate tea ware that unites craftsmanship, cultural heritage, and the spirit of harmony in Japanese tea practice.
