This elegant bamboo hanaire (flower vase) is accompanied by an original hakogaki (box inscription) written by Oda Sessō, former abbot of Daitoku-ji, one of Kyoto’s most important Zen temples.
The piece bears the poetic name “Kazan 華山” (Flower Mountain).
The name evokes an image of flowers quietly blooming across a mountain landscape, expressing abundance held within stillness. In the context of Zen and the tea ceremony, it suggests a natural harmony where beauty arises without excess or display.
In chanoyu, bamboo flower vases are cherished for their ability to highlight the natural character of a single seasonal flower. When paired with Zen calligraphy, a hanaire becomes more than a vessel—it becomes an expression of spiritual sensibility and refined restraint.
This piece is offered in very good pre-owned condition, having been carefully preserved. It is suitable both for use in the tea room and for collectors who appreciate Zen-inscribed tea utensils that embody the quiet elegance of Japanese aesthetics.
A dignified bamboo hanaire that brings together natural material, Zen philosophy, and the contemplative beauty at the heart of the tea ceremony.
