This bamboo chashaku (tea scoop) was crafted by Sōsai and is accompanied by an original hakogaki (box inscription) written by Fukumoto Sekio, former abbot of Daitoku-ji, one of Kyoto’s most significant Zen temples.
The chashaku bears the poetic name “Omokage おもかげ” (Remembrance), a word that evokes lingering impressions, memories, and the quiet presence of what once was. In the context of chanoyu, it suggests a gentle reflection on the past and an appreciation of subtle, enduring beauty.
In the tea tradition, a utensil accompanied by Zen calligraphy carries meaning beyond its practical use, connecting craftsmanship with Zen thought and spiritual lineage. The pairing of the maker’s hand and a Zen priest’s inscription places this chashaku firmly within the authentic framework of Japanese tea culture.
Offered in very good pre-owned condition, this piece has been carefully preserved. It is suitable both for use in tea gatherings and for collectors who value Zen-inscribed tea utensils with depth, refinement, and cultural resonance.
A quietly evocative chashaku that embodies the harmony of bamboo craftsmanship, Zen philosophy, and the contemplative spirit of the tea ceremony.
