Aka (Red) Raku Tea Bowl by Shōraku Sasaki Pre-owned
With Inscription by Sekio Fukumoto, Former Abbot of Daitoku-ji

This Aka Raku tea bowl was crafted by Shōraku Sasaki, working within the long-cherished Raku tradition of Japanese tea ceramics. Raku ware is especially valued in chanoyu for its hand-formed character and the intimate relationship it creates between the maker’s touch, the clay, and the fire.

The accompanying box bears an inscription by Sekio Fukumoto, former abbot of Daitoku-ji, one of Kyoto’s most esteemed Zen temples. Such a hakogaki places the piece within the spiritual and cultural lineage of the tea ceremony and Zen practice.

The bowl is titled “Matsukaze” (松風), meaning “Wind Through the Pines.” This poetic expression refers to the sound of wind passing through a pine forest and is traditionally associated with the subtle, whispering sound of water boiling in the kama during tea preparation. It symbolizes the quiet presence of nature within stillness and evokes a calm, serene state of mind.

Red Raku bowls are admired for their warm, earthy tones and gentle texture when held in the hands. The softly irregular form reflects the wabi aesthetic, where beauty is found in natural simplicity and quiet depth.

This piece is offered in very good pre-owned condition and has been carefully preserved. It is suitable both for use in tea gatherings and for collectors who appreciate Zen-inscribed Raku ware embodying tranquility, nature, and the contemplative spirit of chanoyu.
