Arare-ji Kamon Nishiki

Arare-ji Kamon Nishiki | 霰地花文錦

Like the Ryūkirin Shokō Nishiki, this textile has been preserved at Hōryū-ji Temple. Woven on a deep green ground with white and reddish threads, it features scattered floral motifs set against an arare (hailstone) patterned background.

Because it is woven with a relatively loose structure, the fabric has a soft texture and supple feel. It is also notable for the way its appearance changes with the light, as the colors and tones of the threads shift dramatically depending on the viewing angle and lighting conditions.
