Babamukashi – Premium Ceremonial Matcha

Babamukashi is a premium ceremonial-grade matcha celebrated for its smooth body, gentle umami, and refined natural sweetness. Stone-milled from carefully cultivated shade-grown tencha, it produces a bright green froth and a soft, elegant taste. This blend is particularly well-suited for thin tea (usucha) in the Japanese tea ceremony, offering a refined yet approachable flavor that is enjoyed by both tea practitioners and those new to matcha.

A Matcha Once Favored by a Shogun
Steeped in history, Babamukashi was first cherished by Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu during the early Edo period. Legend tells that the grandmother of Kanbayashi’s first head prepared this special tea for the Shogun, who was so impressed that he granted the Kanbayashi family their renowned Wakemori tea garden in Uji. Ever since, Babamukashi has symbolized refinement, tradition, and the spirit of the samurai.
