Hagi Ware by Kaneko Sōfū — Pre-owned
With inscription by Zenryū, Kōyasan

This Hagi ware tea bowl was crafted by Kaneko Sōfū, a ceramic artist working within the long-cherished tradition of Hagi ceramics. Hagi ware has been highly valued in the Japanese tea ceremony for centuries, admired for its natural glaze effects, soft textures, and the quiet dialogue it creates between clay, fire, and the spirit of the maker.

The bowl is accompanied by an original hakogaki (box inscription) written by Zenryū of Kōyasan, one of Japan’s most revered centers of Buddhist practice. Such an inscription connects the piece to the spiritual and cultural traditions closely associated with chanoyu.

Hagi ware tea bowls are admired for their warm, earthy tones and soft, tactile surfaces that gradually develop a unique character through use. The gently irregular form reflects the wabi aesthetic, where beauty is found in natural variation, simplicity, and quiet depth.

This piece is offered in very good pre-owned condition and has been carefully preserved. It is suitable for use in tea gatherings as well as for collectors who appreciate traditional Hagi ware connected to the spirit of the Japanese tea ceremony.
