Shino Matcha Bowl by Shōzaburō, 5th Generation of Kikyoya Kiln — Pre-owned
With inscription by Jōshō Hashimoto, Former Abbot of Daitoku-ji
This Shino Matcha bowl was crafted by Shōzaburō, the fifth-generation potter of Kikyoya Kiln, continuing a respected lineage of ceramic craftsmanship. Shino ware is cherished in the Japanese tea ceremony for its soft white glaze, subtle textures, and expressive surfaces created through the interaction of clay, ash, and fire.
The bowl is accompanied by an original hakogaki (box inscription) written by Jōshō Hashimoto, former abbot of Daitoku-ji, one of Kyoto’s most revered Zen temples. Such an inscription firmly situates the piece within the spiritual and cultural lineage of chanoyu.
The chawan bears the title “Harusame” (春雨), meaning “Spring Rain.” The name evokes the gentle rain of early spring, symbolizing renewal, quiet beauty, and the soft arrival of the changing season. In the context of tea practice, it reflects a calm and contemplative atmosphere, bringing to mind the subtle beauty of nature.
Shino Matcha bowls are admired for their warm, milky-white glaze, soft forms, and expressive firing marks. The gently irregular shape reflects the wabi aesthetic, where beauty is found in natural variation, simplicity, and quiet depth.
This piece is offered in very good pre-owned condition and has been carefully preserved. It is suitable for use in tea gatherings as well as for collectors who appreciate Zen-inscribed Shino ware that embodies the poetic spirit and timeless traditions of the Japanese tea ceremony.
