This red gourd-shaped sake bottle was crafted by Eiraku Zengorō XVI (Sokuzan), a master potter of the Eiraku family, renowned as one of the Senke Jisshoku (Ten Artisans of the Senke schools)—the traditional artisans who support the Japanese tea ceremony.
The gourd (hyōtan) motif has long been associated with auspiciousness, prosperity, and protection, making it a favored form for tea and sake vessels. The rich red glaze and well-balanced proportions reflect the refined sensibility and technical excellence characteristic of Eiraku ware.
Measuring approximately 15.2 cm in height, this vessel may also be appreciated and used as a hanaire (flower vase) in the context of chanoyu, reflecting the flexible and poetic use of utensils within the tea tradition.
This piece is offered in good pre-owned condition, showing visible signs of age and use, including surface staining consistent with time and careful handling. These traces do not detract from the vessel’s integrity; rather, they speak to its history and continued life within the tea world.
Suitable for appreciation as a tea-ceremony-related vessel or as a collectible example of Senke Jisshoku craftsmanship, this sake bottle embodies the quiet dignity, auspicious symbolism, and lineage of Japanese ceramic art.
