This refined pair of bamboo Ro/Furo futaoki was crafted by Sōchiku and is accompanied by an original hakogaki (box inscription) written by Sato Bokudo, former abbot of Daitoku-ji, one of Kyoto’s most important Zen temples.
Futoki are essential utensils in the Japanese tea ceremony, used to rest the kettle lid or ladle during temae. A matching pair (issō) is particularly valued for its balance and harmony, reflecting the quiet order and mindfulness at the heart of chanoyu.
The natural bamboo shows a restrained elegance, allowing the material’s warmth and subtle character to come forward. The presence of Zen calligraphy adds spiritual and cultural depth, elevating the piece beyond its functional role into an object of contemplation and tradition.
This set is offered in very good pre-owned condition, having been carefully preserved. It is well suited both for use in tea gatherings and for collectors who appreciate Zen-inscribed tea utensils with historical and aesthetic significance.
A dignified pair of futoki that embodies the harmony of craftsmanship, Zen spirit, and the refined sensibility of Japanese tea culture.
