Chashaku with Zen Calligraphy (Very Good Pre-Owned Condition) by Kobayashi Taigen

Prix habituel $148.00

This bamboo chashaku (matcha tea scoop) was crafted by Sōshun and is accompanied by an original hakogaki (box inscription) written by Kobayashi Taigen, former abbot of Daitoku-ji, one of Kyoto’s most important Zen temples.

The chashaku bears the poetic name “Sanae - 早苗”, a name that evokes freshness, renewal, and the quiet vitality of early summer—imagery deeply rooted in the aesthetics of the Japanese tea ceremony.

In the world of chanoyu, a Zen priest’s calligraphy elevates a tea utensil beyond its function, connecting it to Zen philosophy and spiritual lineage. Such pieces are highly valued not only for use in tea gatherings but also as objects of contemplation and collection.

This piece is offered in very good pre-owned condition, showing careful handling and preservation. It is suitable for practical use in tea gatherings, as well as for collectors who appreciate the depth of Zen calligraphy and traditional tea culture.

A refined and meaningful chashaku that embodies the harmony between craftsmanship, Zen spirit, and the seasonal sensibility of chanoyu.
