On August 14, 2025, Urasenke announced that Genshitsu Sen (Hounsai)—the 15th-generation Grand Master and later Daisōshō (Grand Master Emeritus)—passed away at the age of 102. We extend our deepest condolences and pray for his peaceful rest. In honor of his life and his message, “Peacefulness through a Bowl of Tea,” Nara Tea publishes this post with the utmost respect.
A life that spans war and peace
As a university student during World War II, Sen was mobilized into the Imperial Navy and assigned to a tokkotai (special attack/kamikaze) unit, though he was never deployed. The experience marked him deeply; for the rest of his life he spoke of tea as a path away from violence.
From iemoto to global envoy
Sen became Urasenke’s 15th Grand Master in 1964 and later passed the headship to his son in 2002, taking the honorific title Daisōshō. Over seven decades he traveled widely—more than 70 countries, 300+ ceremonies—using chanoyu as cultural diplomacy, even performing a memorial tea ceremony at the USS Arizona in 2011.

“Peacefulness through a Bowl of Tea”
His signature message—“Peacefulness through a Bowl of Tea”—wasn’t a slogan so much as a practice: create a shared pause, and peace can enter the room. In his own words, he sought to impart the spirit of the Way of Tea worldwide so it might contribute to genuine world peace and happiness.

裏千家 大宗匠・千 玄室（鵬雲斎）1923–2025——
「一盌からピースフルネスを」
2025年8月14日、裏千家より、十五代家元・のち大宗匠の千 玄室（鵬雲斎）氏が享年102でご逝去されたことが発表されました。謹んで哀悼の意を表し、ご冥福を心よりお祈り申し上げます。Nara Teaは、そのご生涯と「一盌からピースフルネスを」の志に深い敬意を込め、本記事を掲載いたします。
戦中と戦後——「戦争体験」から「平和」へ
第二次世界大戦期、大学在学中に海軍に召集され、特攻隊（特別攻撃隊）に編入されました（出撃はせず）。この経験は生涯の大きな刻印となり、以後、茶を暴力から遠ざかる道として語り続けました。
家元から、世界への親善使として
1964年に裏千家第15代家元を継承。2002年に家元を譲り、大宗匠の尊称で活動を継続しました。以後70か国以上、300回超におよぶ海外での献茶・茶会を重ね、2011年には真珠湾USSアリゾナ記念館でも追悼の献茶を行いました。茶の湯を文化外交の言語として世界に届けた、その足跡は圧倒的です。
「一盌からピースフルネスを」
大宗匠の標語**「一盌からピースフルネスを（Peacefulness through a Bowl of Tea）」は、単なるスローガンではなく実践でした。一服の静かな“間”を共有することで、人と人の間に和**が生まれる——その信念のもと、国内外を問わず、世界の平和と幸福に資するべく茶の心を伝え続けました。
