Meaning
Literally translated as
“The pine remains green for a thousand years.”

The pine tree, which stays evergreen even through winter, has long symbolized longevity, constancy, resilience, and prosperity in Japanese tradition.

This auspicious phrase expresses a wish for enduring life, unwavering spirit, and happiness that continues across generations.

It is often displayed in a tea room alcove (tokonoma), particularly during New Year celebrations and other joyous occasions honoring longevity and good fortune.

 

松寿千年翠(しょうじゅせんねんのみどり)

意味
「松は千年を経てもなお緑を保つ」という意味の吉祥句です。

松は冬でも葉を落とさず、常に青々とした姿を保つことから、長寿・不変・繁栄・気高さ の象徴とされてきました。

世代を超えて続く命の力や、揺るがぬ心、永く続く幸福への願いを表す言葉です。茶席では、新年や長寿のお祝いなど、慶事の折にふさわしい掛物として用いられます。
