Black Kakewake Hirachawan with Firefly Motif by Keiraku Itō — Pre-owned

楽焼 伊東桂楽造 黒掛分 蛍絵 平茶碗

This hirachawan (wide, shallow tea bowl) was crafted by Keiraku Itō, a Kyoto-based potter known for expressive interpretations of traditional tea ceramics. The form is especially suited for the warmer seasons, offering a sense of openness and lightness that enhances the experience of summer tea.

The bowl features a kakewake glazing technique, where contrasting finishes are intentionally divided across the surface. In this piece, a deep black glaze is set against areas of natural clay, creating a quiet yet striking balance. The boundary between the two is soft and organic, often with subtle transitions that evoke a landscape-like quality rather than a rigid design.

Delicately painted firefly (hotaru) motifs appear across this composition, suggesting the fleeting beauty of early summer evenings in Japan. The imagery brings a gentle poetic atmosphere to the tea setting.

Hand-formed in the spirit of Raku aesthetics, the bowl carries a soft irregularity and warmth that fits naturally in the hands. The interplay of glaze, form, and seasonal imagery reflects the Japanese appreciation for contrast, transience, and understated beauty.

This piece is offered in very good pre-owned condition and has been carefully preserved. It is ideal for summer tea gatherings and for collectors who appreciate tea ware that captures both artistic expression and seasonal sensibility within the tradition of chanoyu.
