Black Bamboo Takayama Chasen with Red Thread | Ryosai Kubo

This handcrafted Takayama Chasen is made from Japanese black bamboo and finished with red thread, adding a striking traditional accent to the deep tone of the bamboo.

Each chasen is individually handcrafted in Takayama, Ikoma, Nara, by 25th-generation chasen master Ryosai Kubo, a Traditional Craftsman certified by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

Ryosai Kubo is one of only 16 Takayama chasen makers carrying on this traditional craft today. Takayama has been renowned for chasen making for centuries, and its highly specialized techniques have been carefully passed down through generations of craftspeople.

From the raw bamboo to the finished chasen, all materials are sourced in Japan. The bamboo is traditionally prepared in Takayama using natural methods, including aburanuki (oil removal) and sun-drying.

The rich black bamboo is beautifully complemented by the red thread, creating a distinctive chasen that combines centuries-old Japanese craftsmanship with a bold yet elegant accent.

Care Instructions

• Before use, soak the prongs in warm water for a few minutes to gently soften them.

• Hand wash only.

• Rinse thoroughly after each use to remove all traces of matcha.

• Allow the chasen to dry completely after use to help prevent mold.

• Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.

Ryosai Kubo continues this heritage as a 25th-generation chasen master. From the preparation of the raw bamboo through the final finishing, the materials used for his chasen are sourced in Japan.

Traditional bamboo preparation techniques, including aburanuki and natural sun-drying, are still carried out in Takayama before each chasen is carefully shaped and finished by hand.
