Silver-Plated Shippo Futaoki – Takaoka Copperware | Kanaya Sorin

This elegant silver-plated Shippo futaoki was crafted by Kanaya Sorin (金谷宗林) in the tradition of Takaoka copperware (Takaoka Dōki), one of Japan’s renowned metalworking traditions.

The design features the classic Shippo (七宝) motif, an interlocking circular pattern that has been used in Japanese decorative arts for centuries. The endlessly connected circles symbolize harmony, continuity, and enduring relationships, making Shippo an auspicious and timeless design.

The surface is finished with silver plating (銀鍍金), giving the piece an elegant silvery appearance and a refined presence in the tea room. Combined with the precise metal craftsmanship for which Takaoka is known, this futaoki complements both formal and seasonal Chanoyu settings.

In the Japanese tea ceremony, a futaoki serves as a rest for the lid of the kama (iron kettle) and for the hishaku (bamboo ladle). Its sculptural Shippo form makes this piece both functional and visually distinctive among the utensils arranged beside the furo or ro.
