Tea Scrolls (Calligraphy for the Tea Room)

In Japanese tea ceremony, the hanging scroll in the tokonoma (alcove) is considered the heart of the tea room. It sets the theme and feeling of the gathering.
Many tea scrolls feature Zen phrases written by Zen monks. These short sayings express ideas such as mindfulness, simplicity, and appreciating the present moment.
Tea masters like Sen no Rikyū were deeply influenced by Zen. For this reason, Zen calligraphy became an important part of the tea ceremony. The scroll invites guests to pause, reflect, and share a quiet moment together.
The scroll is usually chosen to match the season or the theme of the gathering.
Tea scrolls are not only beautiful works of calligraphy—they also reflect the spirit and philosophy of Japanese tea culture.
