Ohi-yaki Wan-nari Matcha Bowl – Ame-sabi Glaze | Izumi Kisen III

This refined Ohi Ware (Ōhi-yaki) matcha bowl was handcrafted by Izumi Kisen III (三代 泉喜仙) of Shoun Kiln (松雲窯) in Kanazawa, Ishikawa. Izumi Kisen III continues the tradition of Ohi tea ceramics at Shoun Kiln, having succeeded to the Kisen name in 1994.

The bowl features the distinctive Ame-sabi glaze (飴寂釉), with rich amber-brown tones and subtle variations that create a warm, subdued surface. This characteristic glaze complements the hand-formed quality and quiet aesthetic associated with Ohi Ware.

Its wan-nari (碗形 / bowl-shaped) form has a softly rounded profile that gently rises from the foot toward the rim. The balanced, traditional silhouette sits comfortably in the hands and allows the depth of the amber glaze to become the central visual feature.

Ohi Ware developed in Kanazawa as tea ceramics rooted in the Raku tradition and is particularly known for its distinctive amber glaze. Shoun Kiln continues this tradition while bringing its own expression to Ohi tea ware.

The warm brown surface also provides a beautiful contrast to the vivid green of freshly whisked matcha, making this chawan an elegant choice for the practice of Chanoyu.
