Ohi-yaki Kittate Matcha Bowl – Ame-Sabi Glaze | Izumi Kisen III

The bowl features an expressive Ame-Jaku glaze (飴寂釉), characterized by deep, warm amber-brown tones and subtle variations across the surface. Ohi ware is particularly known for its rich ame-yu (amber glaze), and the nuanced, subdued character of this finish brings a quiet sense of wabi to the bowl. Ohi ware itself developed as a form of tea ceramic with roots in the Raku tradition.

Its kittate (切立) form is distinguished by relatively straight, upright sides, giving the chawan a strong yet restrained silhouette. The simple architectural form allows the depth and natural variation of the glaze to become the central visual feature.

Like traditional Ohi tea bowls, the piece has the warmth and individuality associated with hand-formed tea ceramics. The rich amber-brown surface provides a beautiful contrast with the vivid green of freshly whisked matcha.

Izumi Kisen III was born in Kanazawa in 1961 and studied under her father, the second-generation Izumi Kisen, before succeeding to the name in 1994. She continues the ceramic tradition of Shoun Kiln, creating Ohi ware with a particular focus on tea ceramics.
