This is a traditional wooden tray with a Surishitsu (wiped lacquer) finish, primarily used in Omotesenke tea ceremonies for the bon-demae (tray tea preparation).
It is also suitable for use as a serving tray in Urasenke ceremonies.

What is the Surishitsu Finish?  A traditional Japanese lacquer technique where layers of lacquer are applied and wiped, revealing the natural wood grain and creating a smooth, elegant finish.
