Kyo-yaki Matcha Bowl with Akikusa & Full Moon

A hand-painted Japanese Kyo-yaki (Kyoto ware) matcha bowl, or chawan, featuring akikusa (秋草), the grasses and flowers of autumn, beneath a full moon accented with gold leaf.

Akikusa and the Full Moon

Akikusa is a beloved seasonal theme in Japanese art and the tea tradition, evoking the quiet beauty of wild grasses and flowers as summer gives way to autumn. Rather than depicting the season through brilliant fall foliage, the delicate autumn grasses express a softer and more poetic side of the season.

Above the autumn landscape, the full moon creates a serene nighttime scene. The addition of gold leaf gives the moon a gentle brilliance and adds an elegant, refined presence to the bowl.

Tsukimi and Seasonal Tea Gatherings

The moon is especially meaningful in early autumn, when Tsukimi (月見), or moon viewing, has long been celebrated in Japan. Together, the full moon and autumn grasses create a classic seasonal composition that beautifully reflects the atmosphere of the Japanese autumn.

This chawan is particularly recommended for late summer through early fall, especially for a Tsukimi chakai or other autumn tea gatherings. Its gold accents give it a slightly more formal and festive character, making it a beautiful choice when serving guests.
