Hatsuyume “First Dream” Kuro Raku Matcha Bowl – Mt. Fuji

This handcrafted Kuro Raku (Black Raku) matcha bowl by Sasaki Shoraku of Shoraku Kiln is named Hatsuyume (初夢), meaning “First Dream of the New Year.” It features a serene light-blue Mount Fuji motif emerging beautifully against the deep black glaze.

In Japanese tradition, the first dream of the New Year is believed to be especially auspicious. The well-known saying “Ichi-Fuji, Ni-Taka, San-Nasubi” (一富士二鷹三茄子) names Mount Fuji first among three symbols considered particularly fortunate to see in the year’s first dream: Mount Fuji, a hawk, and an eggplant.

With Mount Fuji as its central motif, this chawan carries an especially celebratory meaning for the New Year. The soft blue of the mountain creates an elegant contrast with the rich black surface of Kuro Raku, while the vivid green of freshly whisked matcha adds another beautiful layer of color.
