This elegant Kenzan-style matcha bowl from Ikkyu Kiln (壱休窯) features the celebrated Miharu Takizakura (三春滝桜), one of Japan’s most renowned ancient cherry trees.

Located in Miharu, Fukushima, the Miharu Takizakura is a magnificent Beni-shidarezakura (weeping cherry tree) estimated to be more than 1,000 years old. Designated a National Natural Monument in 1922, it is counted among the Three Great Cherry Trees of Japan. Its long branches covered with pale pink blossoms appear to cascade downward like a waterfall, giving the tree its name, Takizakura—“waterfall cherry.”

The exterior of the chawan is decorated in a Kenzan-inspired style, capturing the graceful movement and abundance of the cascading cherry blossoms. In contrast, the black-glazed interior (内黒) creates a dramatic setting for the vivid green of freshly whisked matcha.

The combination of delicate spring blossoms and the deep black interior gives this bowl an elegant balance of softness and depth. It is particularly well suited for spring tea gatherings and sakura season, when the famous Miharu Takizakura typically blooms around mid to late April.
