Katatsuki Chaire – Takatori Glaze with Ninin Shizuka Shifuku

This elegant Katatsuki Chaire (shouldered tea caddy) is handcrafted by ceramic artist Ryuji Nakagawa and finished with a traditional Takatori glaze. Takatori glaze is known for its subtle, earthy tones and beautiful natural variations. The surface has a smooth, glossy finish that enhances the depth and richness of the glaze. 

The Katatsuki is one of the classic shapes of tea caddies used in the Japanese tea ceremony. As its name suggests, it features well-defined "shoulders," a gently rounded body, and softly tapered top and base, creating a harmonious and well-balanced silhouette that has been admired by tea practitioners for centuries.

The tea caddy comes with a beautifully crafted Shifuku (protective silk pouch) made from 100% pure silk, and is presented in a traditional wooden storage box.

Shifuku Textile Designs： Ninin Shizuka

Ninin Shizuka features paired phoenixes enclosed within roundels, arranged in a regular alternating pattern. It is said to have been named after the 8th shōgun of the Muromachi shogunate, Ashikaga Yoshimasa, who wore a robe made from this textile while performing the Noh(能) play Futari Shizuka. In Japanese tradition, the phoenix symbolizes peace, prosperity, and good fortune, making this an auspicious and highly esteemed design among tea practitioners. Although the Noh play is pronounced "Futari Shizuka," this textile is traditionally read as "Ninin Shizuka" in the world of the Japanese tea ceremony.
