Hogetsudo Wasanbon – “Hana Tachibana” Orange-Infused Sugar Sweets

Liqueurs are an essential element in the world of confectionery, adding depth and aroma.
Orange liqueurs produced in France are crafted by carefully selecting both bitter and sweet varieties of oranges, then distilling alcohol infused with their peels.

Inspired by this tradition, the wooden molds for these wasanbon sweets are designed with imagery of everyday life in the French countryside—the birthplace of such liqueurs.

The name Tachibana is drawn from the citrus fruit regarded as the origin of Japanese confectionery. According to the Nihon Shoki, the fruit known as Tokijiku no Kakunomi, brought back from the mythical land of Tokoyo, is identified as tachibana and considered the origin of sweets in Japan.

These wasanbon delicacies gently evoke the refined fragrance of tachibana, a symbol of citrus in Japan.

What is Wasambon?
Wasambon is a rare, fine-grained sugar from Tokushima and Kagawa in Japan, artisan-crafted for over 200 years. Made using traditional techniques passed down through generations, its delicate sweetness and smooth texture make it a prized ingredient in wagashi—elegant confections served in Japanese tea ceremonies to perfectly complement matcha.
