Sho-ha Fukicho-mei Gire | 紹巴富貴長命裂

This is a richly expressive textile featuring peonies, clouds, and lions, with a light brown and yellow base, adorned with peony arabesque and thunder patterns, and the characters for “wealth and longevity” (Fuki Chōmei) incorporated into the design, giving it the name “Kire.” This textile is legendary in that the pattern changes completely depending on where it is cut. There are other textiles with the same name where lions are replaced by kirin or clouds, but it is likely that all of these patterns were originally part of a single piece of fabric.
