Tsuta Maki-e Nakatsugi Tea Caddy by Kashō Yoshita – Nashi-ji Interior – Pre-Owned

The flowing ivy vines create a refined sense of movement across the lacquered surface. In Japanese seasonal aesthetics, tsuta is especially associated with autumn, when its leaves turn rich shades of red and gold. Yoshita is known for incorporating seasonal Japanese motifs into his lacquer tea utensils, and tsuta appears in other documented works by the artist as an autumn motif.

The interior is finished in nashi-ji (梨子地), a traditional lacquer technique in which fine metallic powder creates a softly shimmering, pear-skin-like surface. The subtle brilliance of the interior provides a beautiful contrast to the exterior maki-e decoration.

Created by Kashō Yoshita, a Yamanaka lacquerware maki-e artist from Ishikawa Prefecture, this piece reflects the fine lacquer and decorative techniques for which his tea utensils are known. Yoshita was born in 1940 into a family of maki-e artisans and was certified as a Traditional Craftsman in 1998. His work has received numerous awards and has been exhibited at department stores throughout Japan.

A beautiful seasonal tea utensil for usucha, particularly suited to autumn tea gatherings.
