Crafted by Touan, a Kyoto-based kiln founded in 1922, this piece features their original glaze technique known as Hoshi-kesshō (Star Crystal).

The delicate star-like crystalline patterns that appear on the surface are naturally formed during firing, as the glaze components crystallize under specific conditions. The result is a shimmering, sharp brilliance that shifts with the angle of light, offering a sense of depth and mystery. Compared to Hana-kesshō ("Flower Crystal"), which is also a type of crystal glaze, Star Crystal is characterized by a more angular, radiant appearance.

This flat matcha bowl features a wide mouth and a low profile, making it easy to whisk and pleasant to drink from. As part of Touan’s series, which also includes tenmoku-style and katakuchi (spouted) bowls, it blends tradition with modern aesthetics, making it suitable for both everyday tea moments and formal gatherings.
