Meaning of “Matsu ni Kokon no Iro Nashi” (松無古今色)

This traditional Zen phrase means “The pine tree's color remains unchanged through past and present.”

The evergreen pine symbolizes constancy, longevity, and the timeless nature of truth.

In Zen philosophy, the phrase expresses the idea that while the world and circumstances are constantly changing, the essential nature of things remains unchanged.

The pine is also an auspicious symbol in Japanese culture, making this calligraphy especially suitable for New Year and Hatsugama tea gatherings, as well as year-round display.
