Kyo Ware Shiba Inu Futaoki – Red, Black & White Shiba

This charming Kyo Ware (Kyō-yaki) futaoki, handcrafted by Kyoto ceramic artist Sanshiro Imaoka (今岡三四郎), features three Shiba Inu dogs arranged together in a triangular form.

The three dogs represent the beloved coat colors of the Japanese Shiba Inu: Aka Shiba (Red Shiba), Kuro Shiba (Black Shiba), and Shiro Shiba (White Shiba). Each dog is individually modeled and decorated, giving the piece a playful personality while retaining the refined craftsmanship of Kyoto ceramics.

In Chanoyu, a futaoki is a small tea utensil traditionally used to rest the lid of the kama (iron kettle) or the hishaku (bamboo ladle). This piece brings a lighthearted Japanese motif into the tea room while remaining a functional utensil for tea practice.

The Shiba Inu is one of Japan’s native dog breeds and is admired for its alert expression, compact form, and distinctive character. With all three colors gathered together, this futaoki makes an especially delightful piece for Shiba Inu lovers as well as collectors of unique Japanese tea utensils.
