Kiku-Kiri Nakanatsume by Juho Kobayashi
A refined Nakanatsume (中棗) by Japanese lacquer artist Juho Kobayashi (小林寿峰), finished in deep black lacquer and decorated with the traditional Kiku-Kiri (菊桐), or Chrysanthemum and Paulownia, motif.
Kiku and kiri are two of Japan’s most distinguished classical motifs. The chrysanthemum (kiku) has long been associated with longevity, refinement, and nobility, while paulownia (kiri) is an auspicious motif historically connected with prestige and prosperity.
Together, Kiku-Kiri creates an elegant and dignified composition with a distinctly traditional Japanese character. While chrysanthemum alone is often associated with autumn, the established Kiku-Kiri combination extends beyond a strictly seasonal motif, making this natsume suitable for a variety of formal and celebratory tea settings.
Kataji – A Carefully Prepared Lacquer Foundation
This natsume features Kataji (堅地), a traditional method of preparing a strong and carefully built foundation beneath the lacquer finish. Creating a well-prepared base is an important part of fine urushi work, contributing to the durability, stability, and refined appearance of the finished piece.
Against the deep black lacquer, the Kiku-Kiri design creates a restrained yet distinguished presence, allowing the natsume to coordinate beautifully with a wide range of chawan and other utensils.
The Nakanatsume (中棗) is a classic, well-balanced form of chaki used to hold matcha for the preparation of usucha (thin tea).
Created by Juho Kobayashi, this piece combines traditional lacquer craftsmanship with one of Japan’s most recognizable classical designs. It is a refined choice for a chakai, a celebratory tea gathering, or a collection of traditional Japanese lacquer tea utensils.
