Iwaki Bunrin Utsushi Cha-ire by Ryuki Kiln

A refined Cha-ire (茶入) by Ryuki Kiln (龍喜窯), created as an Iwaki Bunrin Utsushi (岩城文琳写)—an interpretation of the celebrated Iwaki Bunrin cha-ire.

Bunrin – A Classical Cha-ire Form

Bunrin (文琳) is one of the classical forms of cha-ire used in Chanoyu. Characterized by its compact, rounded body and graceful proportions, the Bunrin form has been admired for centuries and is closely associated with the tradition of fine ceramic tea caddies for koicha.

The name Bunrin is traditionally associated with the shape of a fruit, and the form is appreciated for its full, softly rounded silhouette.

This piece is an utsushi (写), a carefully made interpretation of an established historical model. Utsushi holds an important place in the Japanese tea tradition: rather than being understood simply as a “copy,” it reflects the study and continuation of admired historical forms, glazes, and aesthetics through later generations of craftspeople.

Iwaki Bunrin

This cha-ire takes its inspiration from the Iwaki Bunrin (岩城文琳), a historically recognized Bunrin-style tea caddy.

By recreating the character of this celebrated model, Ryuki Kiln allows the form and aesthetic of a classical cha-ire to be appreciated and used within contemporary Chanoyu.

The beauty of the piece lies in the relationship between its rounded Bunrin form, ceramic surface, glaze, and firing. Subtle variations in tone and texture give the cha-ire depth and individuality, particularly when viewed closely in the intimate setting of the tea room.

A cha-ire is traditionally used to hold matcha for the preparation of koicha (thick tea) and is treated as an important utensil within a formal tea setting.

With its connection to a historical model and its classical Bunrin form, this Iwaki Bunrin Utsushi is a distinguished choice for koicha, chakai, and formal Chanoyu, as well as for collectors interested in the history and tradition of Japanese tea ceramics.
