Distinctive-Form Cha-ire with Sayagata & Floral Medallion Shifuku

A distinctive Japanese Cha-ire (茶入) with an expressive, sculptural form, accompanied by a woven shifuku (仕覆) featuring the traditional Sayagata Hanamaru-mon (紗綾形花丸文) pattern.

Unlike more standardized cha-ire forms, this piece is characterized by its individual silhouette and subtle irregularity. Its sculptural shape invites appreciation from different angles, allowing the form, glaze, and character of the ceramic surface to become an important part of its presence in the tea room.

A cha-ire is traditionally used to hold matcha for the preparation of koicha (thick tea) and holds an important place among the utensils selected for Chanoyu.

Sayagata Hanamaru-mon Shifuku

The accompanying shifuku features Sayagata Hanamaru-mon (紗綾形花丸文), a traditional Japanese textile design combining the geometric sayagata pattern with elegant floral medallions.

Sayagata is a continuous interlocking geometric pattern based on an ancient Buddhist symbol that has been used throughout Asia for centuries. In Japan, the repeating design came to be associated with continuity, longevity, and good fortune.

The geometric background is complemented by hanamaru (花丸)—flowers arranged within circular medallions. The combination of the structured sayagata pattern and graceful floral motifs creates a richly detailed yet balanced textile design.

The shifuku is made from koshoku (交織), a woven textile combining different types of fibers.

In Chanoyu, the shifuku is more than simply a protective pouch. Its textile, pattern, color, and relationship to the cha-ire are all part of the aesthetic appreciation of the utensil.
