This handcrafted Takayama Chasen is made from Japanese black bamboo and finished with Coral #3 thread, adding a warm and vibrant touch of color to the traditional form.

Each chasen is individually handcrafted in Takayama, Ikoma, Nara, by 25th-generation chasen master Ryosai Kubo, a Traditional Craftsman certified by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

Ryosai Kubo is one of only 16 Takayama chasen makers carrying on this traditional craft today. Takayama has been renowned for chasen making for centuries, and its highly specialized techniques have been carefully passed down through generations of craftspeople.

From the raw bamboo to the finished chasen, all materials are sourced in Japan. The bamboo is traditionally prepared in Takayama using natural methods, including aburanuki (oil removal) and sun-drying.

The deep tone of the black bamboo is beautifully complemented by the Coral #3 thread, creating a distinctive chasen that combines traditional Japanese craftsmanship with a warm, refined touch of color.

Care Instructions

• Before use, soak the prongs in warm water for a few minutes to gently soften them.
• Hand wash only.
• Rinse thoroughly after each use to remove all traces of matcha.
• Allow the chasen to dry completely after use to help prevent mold.
• Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.

Ryosai Kubo continues this heritage as a 25th-generation chasen master. From the preparation of the raw bamboo through the final finishing, the materials used for his chasen are sourced in Japan.

Traditional bamboo preparation techniques, including aburanuki and natural sun-drying, are still carried out in Takayama before each chasen is carefully shaped and finished by hand.
