Kyo Ware

Artist: Sakata Yahata (Yahata Kiln)
Born in 1950 in Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan.

In 1975, Sakata began studying under Kozo Kawashima, training for four years.
He became independent in 1980 and has continued his work to the present day.

While respecting the natural character and texture of clay, Sakata aims to create handcrafted vessels with the delicate sensibility associated with Kyoto craftsmanship.
His work balances the raw beauty of the material with refined, thoughtful forms.

About Kyo (Kiyomizu) Ware
Kyo-yaki, also known as Kiyomizu-yaki, is a traditional style of pottery that originated in Kyoto over 400 years ago, during the late 16th to early 17th century. From delicate and ornate designs to simple and refined forms, Kyo-yaki offers great variety and is cherished both as tea utensils and as tableware for everyday use.
