This Aka Raku (Red Raku) matcha chawan was crafted by Sasaki Shoraku (佐々木松楽), a Kyoto potter known for traditional Raku-style tea bowls.

The bowl bears the poetic name “Fukuju” (福寿), meaning “Good Fortune and Longevity.” Its warm red Raku surface and softly formed shape embody the understated character associated with Raku ware and the aesthetics of Chanoyu.

The accompanying wooden box features a hakogaki (箱書) inscription by Fukumoto Sekio (福本積應), a Rinzai Zen priest associated with Daitoku-ji in Kyoto. The inscription records the name Fukuju, adding an important connection between the chawan and the Zen tradition closely intertwined with Japanese tea culture.

The auspicious meaning of 福寿 makes this chawan especially appropriate for New Year tea gatherings, Hatsugama, celebratory chakai, and other auspicious occasions.
