Akane-ji Botan Kutsuwa Karahan mon | 茜地牡丹轡唐花文

This textile, a type of nishiki (brocade), features peony motifs in green, white, and purple. The peonies are enclosed within large stylized floral (karabana) patterns, whose opposing curved contours are linked together in a continuous design.

The name of this pattern is derived from its resemblance to a horse’s bit (kutsuwa), the piece of tack placed in a horse’s mouth, as reflected in the distinctive shape formed by the interconnected curves.
