We are honored to welcome Tango Tanimura, a 20th-generation chasen (bamboo whisk) master, for a rare series of live demonstrations in Portland and the Bay Area.

The chasen is an essential tool in Japanese tea ceremony, used to prepare matcha. This delicate craft has been passed down within a single family in Takayama, Nara, for over 500 years.

Today, only about 16 chasen masters remain in Japan.

About the Experience

This special event offers a unique opportunity to witness a living tradition up close.

During the demonstration, you will observe the careful process of shaping bamboo into a chasen — a craft that requires years of training and deep dedication.

No prior experience with tea ceremony is needed.
This event is open to everyone, whether you are new to matcha or already familiar with Japanese tea culture.

Guests will also have the opportunity to enjoy matcha and experience the quiet beauty of chanoyu.
