About Rakunyu Yoshimura (吉村楽入)
Rakunyu Yoshimura III, born in Kyoto in 1959, is the third-generation master of the Yoshimura Rakunyu pottery tradition.
He succeeded to the name Rakunyu Yoshimura in 2004 and is a certified Traditional Craftsman (Dento Kogeishi) specializing in Raku pottery.
In 2011, he was recognized by the City of Kyoto as a “Master Craftsman of the Future.”
As a practitioner of the Omotesenke school of Chanoyu, he brings a deep understanding of the Japanese tea ceremony to his ceramic creations.
While preserving traditional Raku pottery techniques, he is known for incorporating imaginative designs, seasonal themes, and contemporary artistic expressions into his tea bowls.
His works beautifully bridge the traditions of Japanese tea culture with modern creativity.
Traditional Raku Pottery
Raku-yaki originated in Kyoto during the time of Sen no Rikyu in the late 16th century and has been closely associated with the Japanese tea ceremony for more than 400 years.
Traditionally shaped by hand rather than on a potter's wheel, Raku tea bowls are admired for their natural forms, soft texture, and comfortable warmth when held.
The Yoshimura Rakunyu kiln continues this tradition while introducing fresh artistic interpretations.
A Unique Fusion of Japanese Tradition and American Culture
The “American Dream” matcha bowl celebrates the meeting of two cultures through art.
The contrast between traditional Kyoto Raku pottery and the vibrant New York City skyline creates a distinctive expression of modern Chanoyu.
Ideal for contemporary tea gatherings, collectors of Raku pottery, or anyone who appreciates the cultural connection between Japan and the United States.
Presented in a traditional paulownia wooden box, this matcha bowl also makes a thoughtful and memorable gift.
Made in Kyoto, Japan.
