Benishino Tea Bowl by Shigezo Sato — Pre-owned
With inscription by Etsudō Takahashi, Former Abbot of Daitoku-ji

This Benishino tea bowl was crafted by Shigezo Sato, a ceramic artist working within the tradition of Shino ware. Benishino is admired for its warm reddish tones and expressive glaze effects created through the interaction of clay, glaze, and fire. These natural variations give each piece a unique character that is highly appreciated in the world of the Japanese tea ceremony.

The bowl is accompanied by an original hakogaki (box inscription) written by Etsudō Takahashi, former abbot of Daitoku-ji, one of Kyoto’s most revered Zen temples. Such an inscription firmly situates the piece within the spiritual and cultural lineage of chanoyu.

The chawan bears the title “Setsugekka” (雪月花), meaning “Snow, Moon, and Flowers.” This traditional expression represents the beauty of nature across the seasons and symbolizes elegance, harmony, and the fleeting yet precious moments of life. Within the context of tea practice, it evokes a poetic appreciation for nature and the changing seasons.

Benishino tea bowls are admired for their warm tones, soft textures, and expressive surfaces formed during firing. The gently irregular form reflects the wabi aesthetic, where beauty is found in natural variation, simplicity, and quiet depth.

This piece is offered in very good pre-owned condition and has been carefully preserved. It is suitable for use in tea gatherings as well as for collectors who appreciate Zen-inscribed tea ware connected to the traditions and spirit of the Japanese tea ceremony.
