Hagi Ware Tea Bowl by Takashi Ajishita
With Zen Calligraphy by Etsudō Takahashi, Former Abbot of Daitoku-ji

This Hagi ware tea bowl was crafted by Takashi Ajishita, a ceramic artist continuing the revered tradition of Hagi ceramics, long treasured in the Japanese tea ceremony for its refined textures, natural glaze effects, and the intimate relationship it creates between clay, fire, and spirit.

The bowl is accompanied by an original hakogaki (box inscription) written by Etsudō Takahashi, former abbot of Daitoku-ji, one of Kyoto’s most respected Zen temples. Such an inscription firmly situates the piece within the spiritual and cultural lineage of chanoyu.

The chawan bears the title “Zuiun” (瑞雲), meaning “Auspicious Clouds.” This expression symbolizes good fortune, prosperity, and positive energy. In the context of tea practice, it conveys harmony, well-being, and blessings, making the bowl not only a functional tea utensil but also a meaningful collectible imbued with auspicious symbolism.

Hagi ware tea bowls are admired for their warm, earthy tones and the soft, tactile surface that develops a unique patina with use. The gently irregular form embodies the wabi aesthetic, where beauty is found in natural variation, simplicity, and quiet depth.

This piece is offered in very good pre-owned condition and has been carefully preserved. It is well suited for use in tea gatherings as well as for collectors who appreciate Zen-inscribed Hagi ware that unites craftsmanship, auspicious symbolism, and the timeless spirit of the Japanese tea ceremony.
