Tea Bowl by Kahei Shima — Pre-owned
With inscription by Baishisō of Ryōan-ji
Title: “Sekitei” (“Stone Garden”)

This tea bowl was crafted by Kahei Shima, a distinguished ceramic artist within the tradition. The bowl comes with an original hakogaki (box inscription) written by Baishisō of Ryōan-ji, one of Kyoto’s most celebrated Zen temples. This inscription connects the piece directly to the spiritual and cultural lineage of chanoyu.

The chawan bears the title “Sekitei” (“Stone Garden”), evoking the famous stone gardens of Zen temples. The name symbolizes stillness, contemplation, and the beauty found in simplicity—reflecting the deep Zen spirit central to the tea ceremony.

Raku tea bowls are prized for their natural, irregular forms, tactile warmth, and the sense of quiet depth they bring to tea gatherings.

This piece is offered in very good pre-owned condition and is suitable both for tea practice and for collectors who value Zen-inscribed tea ware deeply rooted in Japanese tradition.
