Tango Tanimura – 20th-Generation Master Chasen Craftsman
Tango Tanimura is the 20th-generation master chasen (tea whisk) craftsman from Takayama, Nara, Japan — a village with over 500 years of history as the birthplace of the traditional bamboo tea whisk used in chanoyu (the Japanese tea ceremony).
The Tanimura family has been making chasen since the Muromachi period (14th–16th century) and continues to supply their handcrafted tea whisks to the Urasenke Grand Tea Master and other major tea schools in Japan.
Each chasen is entirely hand-carved from a single piece of bamboo, without the use of machines.
Through generations of refined technique, Tango Tanimura upholds the harmony, precision, and aesthetic sensitivity that lie at the heart of chanoyu.
His work represents the living spirit of Japan’s traditional craftsmanship — a bridge connecting centuries of artistry to the present day.
